Dragonkind Black Dragon Guide
The black dragon is the one everyone wants. It's also the one we can say the least about with proof — so this page is careful about the difference between what's known and what's a guess.
What's actually known
Across the public runs we've studied, no player has posted a verified bond with a black dragon. The runs we could verify end with an orange swordtail, or with a burn. That doesn't mean blacks don't exist — the game's own rules text says rare dragons appear for riders who act fearlessly and think sharply — but nobody we can point to has the card yet.
The game decides. You pick how you act in the Vale, and the dragon picks you. There is no menu, no code and no color picker that sets your result.
What "rare dragon" rules mean in practice
- Bold, not reckless. In the run that bonded, the player roared back at a testing dragon and climbed on. Bold answers worked better than running.
- Sharp, not soft. The same rules text couples fearlessness with sharpness. Choices where you read the situation before acting fit that.
- Alive is a prerequisite. Every rare bond still starts with surviving the dragons that aren't yours. Backing off a hostile dragon you don't need is not cowardice — it keeps the run alive.
How to raise your odds
- Read our player paths so you recognize a testing moment when it happens — most burns come from missing one.
- Favor bold, loyal and sharp choices when the game asks, and pick your moment near the end — the final choice is where the bond happens in the runs we saw.
- If a dragon burns you, start the retry timer and treat each run as a data point. Rare dragons are a numbers game as much as a choices game.
Want to practice the moment without the wait? Our dragon quiz grades the same traits — fearless plus sharp is the only mix that gets a black there. And our Threshing Day game lets you bond and collect all 30 dragons with no email and no timer.

Questions people ask
- Can you get a black dragon in Dragonkind?
- The game's own rules say rare dragons like blacks appear for riders who act fearlessly and think sharply. No public run we've studied has posted a verified black bond yet, so treat any 'guaranteed black' claim with suspicion.
- Is there a code or answer key for the black dragon?
- No. There's no menu, code or answer key that sets your dragon. You make choices, the dragon decides.
- What choices lead to a black dragon?
- There's no verified path. The game's rules point at bold, sharp play, and the one bonded run we wrote up rewards bold answers — but one run is a pattern, not a promise.
- How rare is the black dragon?
- Rarer than anything we've seen bonded in public videos. If you get one, the community wants to see your card.
